The fall 2020 co-op student experience

By: Ooha Avula and Hazel Jiang

Almost half a year into the pandemic, University of Ottawa students, Ooha and Hazel were brought into Jumping Elephants as co-op students who were integral to the herd! Their hands-on, remote learning experience was unlike any other.

Here is how Ooha and Hazel brought big impact to the team:

Ooha Avula, MSc Computer Science Student

When I joined Jumping Elephants, I was motivated by the different projects the organization was working on.

Initially, I learned about the technologies and application functionality used to create customized solutions for data management. I then used my ability in vulnerability assessment to perform a security review and make recommendations for any required corrective measures. This not only helped me improve my know-how but also provided me with insights about how security procedures can and should be integrated into the solution integration consulting process in which developers operate. I also concentrated on detecting bugs, issues, and defects by performing manual and automated testing on complex applications, realizing that quality assurance is critical.

“My time as a Technical Business Analyst and Software Developer intern at Jumping Elephants has been extremely valuable for networking, gaining experience, and eventually giving me a realistic overview of business activities and the work of software developers.”

Hazel Jiang, BCom Business Technology Management Student

The chance to be a part of such a high-growth company dedicated to the design and implementation of the most critical and innovative solutions for the government was what motivated me to apply for a job at Jumping Elephants.

I was part of a multidisciplinary team with experts from different backgrounds where we work together on development, operations, maintenance, and enhancement support to help our clients in their digital transformation journey. I worked specifically on test automation, involving end-to-end testing, which centers on developing, executing and maintaining automated test suites in Subject7. When working on the software testing, I also took the chance to conduct load testing of the system to help identify the maximum operating capacity of applications as well as system bottlenecks.

“This unique experience gave me a great exposure to software testing, and from there, I’ve had the opportunity to broaden my skillets, gain new insights about software development, and learn about business management every single day.”
