Clients:

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED)

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)

Ontario Ministry of Education

Project Goal

Jumping Elephants worked on three projects with government agencies in Canada (2 Federal & 1 Provincial) to explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing user experiences across various domains, use cases and industries. This case study delves into these three distinct projects, showcasing the diverse applications of AI and the valuable insights gleaned.

Challenges

ISED

Simplifying complex regulations for businesses and ensuring user trust in AI-driven decision making.

NRCan

Ensuring clear communication and mitigating confusion caused by technical jargon and AI-generated responses.

Ontario Ministry of Education

Understanding student, parent and educator perceptions of AI in education and identifying opportunities to leverage AI into learning experiences.

Methodology

ISED

Employed a combined approach involving various research activities including:

  • Background documents review,

  • Comparative analysis,

  • Ethnographic interviews and

  • Design thinking workshop with stakeholders to explore user journeys, identify pain points, and collaboratively brainstorm AI-powered solutions.

NRCan

Conducted usability testing on an AI-supported regulatory navigation tools designed for mining permitting.

Ontario Ministry of Education

Gathered in-depth user insights by employing a combined approach of:

  • Online surveys,

  • User interviews, and

  • Diary studies.

Findings

The need and type of AI solutions varied depending on the project's context. However, across all projects, users expressed enthusiasm for the potential of AI to improve efficiency, personalize experiences, and support complex tasks.

  • Users value AI's ability to analyze regulations and provide informed decision-making support.

However, concerns arose around transparency and potential bias in AI algorithms.

  • Users appreciate the tool's functionality but struggle with technical language and require clearer explanations for AI-generated answers.

  • Educators recognize the benefits of AI in education, including generating creative content, streamlining administrative tasks, and facilitating personalized learning.

Concerns exist regarding the accuracy and potential impact on critical thinking skills.

Solutions

The effectiveness of AI based solutions varied depending on the project's context.

  • Recommended prioritizing and developing an intuitive user interface, prioritizing transparency in AI decision-making, and to integrate educational resources to guide users in the regulatory space.

  • Emphasized the importance of clear user guidance within the AI tool, alongside functionalities that simplify complex regulatory language and offer relevant updates.

  • Advocated for the development of a teacher-focused AI chatbot that prioritises content creation, student support, administrative assistance and offers engaging features to foster student interaction.

Impact

These projects contribute valuable insights into user needs and perceptions of AI, informing the responsible and effective development of AI-powered solutions.

ISED

Improved user experience can streamline business interactions with government regulations, boosting efficiency.

Ontario Ministry of Education

Integration of AI can empower educators, personalise learning experiences, and ultimately improve student outcomes.

NRCan

Enhanced usability can expedite the mining permitting process, saving companies time and resources.

This case study demonstrates that AI is not a one-size-fits-all solution. By prioritizing user needs, conducting thorough research, and employing a human-centred approach, AI can be harnessed to create valuable and trustworthy experiences across various sectors.
